OUR JOURNEY: TRANSFORMING LOSS INTO GROWTH

We are a family-run business with a deep respect for our planet and the web of life it supports.

Our journey began with the loss of my beloved mother. As a final act of love, we decided to plant her favourite tree above her ashes, a gift to the environment and a living memorial for us, our children and future generations to cherish.

More and more people are choosing woodland and natural burials, reflecting a wish to honour life and our connection to nature, and to leave something positive behind.

After my mother’s funeral, her ashes were returned to us in a plain cardboard box, which felt at odds with the love and grief we were feeling. So we set out to find a biodegradable urn that was both kind to the environment and beautiful to look at. Along the way, we learned something that surprised us: ashes contain substances that can harm the soil.

That changed what we were looking for. We now needed a vessel that would break down slowly, allowing rainwater to gradually disperse those substances over time and protect the soil and plants above.

We looked at many options, but none felt right. Some were far from eco-friendly, and others looked a little too much like oversized toilet rolls. We searched the world, considering leaf, bamboo and reed, until we came across the humble but enchanting Calabash. It met every one of our requirements, and more.

With a heartfelt ceremony (and a bit of a party), we placed my mother’s Calabash at the base of a large planter and topped it with her cherished olive tree. The tree has thrived ever since, giving us a place for quiet reflection and remembrance. And best of all, my mother is still part of every family gathering, and she never misses a BBQ!
